Shawn Lee hat das legendäre “Bondo Rock” – Album der Incredicle Bongo Band gecovert. Vor allem das Stück “Apache” ist in der Incredible Bongo Band Version ein Block Party Klassiker geworden und die Drum-Breaks aus diesem Stück wurden tausendfach gesampled. Shawn Lee’s Idee, das Album nun mit einem indischen Flair versehen zu covern, funktioniert bestens. Das Ergebnis “Tabla Rock”, mit seiner Incredible Tabla Band eingespielt, macht Laune und gefällt!
Die Soul Sängerin Jean Wells hat in den sechziger und siebziger Jahren eine Reihe wunderbarer Soulsongs aufgenommen, die es nun endlich auf einer CD versammelt gibt. “Soul on Soul” heißt die Compilation, die bei BBE veröffentlicht wurde. Für die Vinyl-Freunde gibt es ein schönes 7″-Box-Set mit den besten Songs. KLasse! Mehr Soul auf 45er Singles gibt es vor und nach der Vorstellung der Jean Wells Compilation.
Zum Abschluss gibt es dann das Beste aus Al Kent’s Disco Demands Compilations, die nun auf BBE veröffentlicht wurden. Das CD-Set umfasst alle fünf Folgen, die Vinyl-Edition das Beste davon auf zwei Doppel-Alben, die man definitiv als essentiell bezeichnen darf.

Die letze Sendung in diesem Jahr ist noch einmal voll gepackt mit neuen Platten. Nach fast 30 Singles in der Juke Box Jam Serie hat Jazzman nun die erste Compilation mit den raren Rhythm’n'Blues Stücken herausgebracht. Nun haben auch CD-Käufer diesen, auch gut 50 Jahre nach der Erstveröffentlichungung noch immer taufrischen, Sound im Player. Klasse! Feinen Soul gibt es auf der neuen Numero Compilation in der Eccentric Soul Reihe, die sich dieses Mal auf die Nickel & Penny Labels fokusiert. Wie immer sehr schön zusammen gestellt, mit ausführlichen und gut recherchierten Liner-Notes. Meine Empfehlung.
Die zweite Hälfte der Sendung hat Afrobeat als Schwerpunkt, insbesondere zwei Veröffentlichungenen stehen im Mittelpunkt: Daptone Records haben, in Zusammenarbiet mit dem Vinyl-Sammler und Betreiber des Voodoo Funk Blogs Frank Gossner, ein Album von El Rego et ses Commandos wieder veröffentlicht. Ein tolle Platte. Das kann man auch über die neuste Compilation aus dem Hause Analog Afrika sagen: “Bambara Mystik Soul” bringt spannede Sounds aus Burkina Faso aus den Jahren 1974 bis 1979. Auch hier gilt: Wie immer sehr schön zusammen gestellt, mit ausführlichen und gut recherchierten Liner-Notes. Meine Empfehlung.

Fast schon eine klassische Soul Unlimited Sendung: Frisch abgestaubte Jazz-Grooves, Latin Sounds, Reggae, Elektronisches, sowie eine kräftige Portion Soul und Funk gibt es in diesen zwei Stunden zu hören.
Jazzman bringt uns den mexikanischen Jazz des Tino Contreras näher und Strut Records haben eine Compilation mit den brodelnden Sounds von Mighty Sparrow am Start: Soul und Calypso-Sounds, die in 2012 noch öfters bei einschlägigen Rare Groove Club-Nächten die TänzerInnen begeistern werden.
Die Echocentrics haben mich schon mit ihrem Debütalbun “Sunshadows” schwer beeindruckt. Nun haben sie das MP3-Album “Echoland” veröffentlicht, das ein Tribute-Album mit neu interpretierten Songs des Produzenten Timbaland ist. Sehr schön!
Auf dem kleinen Label G.E.D. Soul kommen in letzter Zeit verstärkt interessante Platten heraus. Aktuelle Veröffentlichung ist das neue Album der Band Sky Hi, die bereits seit über zehn Jahren aktiv ist. Auf “Testify” beweisen sie was in ihnen steckt: Moderner Funk mit einer kräftigen Prise Soul, der unter die Haut geht.
Timmion Records haben ein Album mit Aufnahmen des aus Detroit stammenden Soul Sängers O.C. Tolbert veröffentlicht. Die Aufnahmen sind überwiegend in den 60er Jahren entstanden und größtenteils noch nie auf Vinyl veröffentlicht gewesen. Northern Soul und auch mal etwas rauhere Funk Stücke wechseln sich ab, insgesamt eine absolut spannende und qualitativ exzellente Platte!
Auch Jazzman wartet mit bislang unveröffentlichtem Soul aus den späten 70ern auf: Das verloren geglaubte Album der Band Gold, die in der Sammler-Szene vor allem durch die obskure Single “What About The Child” bekannt war, ist nun endlich via Jazzman veröffentlicht worden. Was für ein Album: wunderbarer Soul, mal groovend, mal mellow und vor allem großartig!

Ein Auftakt mit Pauken und Trompeten. Brass Ensembles sind in letzter Zeit wieder in Mode gekommen und es gibt auch einige Bands die aktuell mit erstklassigen Veröffentlichungen präsent sind. Besonders empfehlen möchte ich euch das Hypnotic Brass Ensemble und seine 12″-EP “Bulletproof Brass”.
Zur Jahreszeit passend ist die neue Compilation auf Tramp Records. Label-Macher Tobias Kirmayer hat sich für “Santa’s Funk & Soul Christmas Party” mit Jan Kohlmeyer zusammen getan, um eine Sammlung fast vergessener Weihnachts-Songs auszugraben. Das stilistische Spektrum ist klar abgegrenzt: Funk, Soul und Jazz aus den 60er und 70er Jahren. Die Songs haben vor allem eins gemeinsam: Klasse. Die Platte der Woche!
Auch das Debüt-Album von Slim Moore And The Mar-Kays hat mich absolut überzeugt. Der jamaikanisch-kanadische Sänger Slim Moore hat sich mit Musikern vom Soul Jazz Orchestra zusammen getan und ein stimmiges Soul und Funk Album produziert, das an die goldene Ära der Blaxploitation Soundtracks erinnert.
Von Lee McDonald gab es schon ein paar 12″ Singles auf Favorite Records, vor allem mit Remixen seiner Songs. Nun hat das Label das komplette Album “Sweet Magic” wiederveröffentlicht. Modern Soul aus den späten 70er Jahren, sehr schön! Ebenfalls aus Frankreich, vom Label “En Avant La Zizique”, kommen zwei sehr interessante 10″-Compilations mit rarem Soul aus den frühen 60er Jahren: Alvin “Shine” Robinson und Levert aka “Leevert” Allison sind die beiden Sänger die hier vorgestellt werden.

Neues auf Gilles Peterson’s Label Brownswood Recordings in dieser Sendung. Die siebte Folge der Brownswood Bubblers versammlt eine Reihe von interessanten, aber noch relativ unbekannten, aktuellen Produktionen, die Gilles Peterson gerne eine breiteren Öffentlichkeit präsentiren möchte. Sehr abwechslungsreich und doch gut durchhörbar zusammengestellt.
Großartig finde ich das Debüt-Album der Jazz-Sängerin Zara McFarlane, das ebenfalls bei Brownswood erschienen ist. Einige der schönsten Songs aus dem Album habe ich für diese Sendung ausgewählt. Ich wünsche Zara McFarlane, dass dies der Beginn einer erfolgreichen Karriere sein wird, ähnlich wie bei Ihrem Sänger- und Label-Kollegen Jose James!
Was die Herren Brandt, Brauer und Frick mit ihrem Ensemble fabrizieren ist absolut spannend! Techno mit analoger Instrumentierung. Ihr zweites Album “Mr.Machine” ist soeben bei K7 erschienen und sollte man sich unbedingt anhören. Einen ersten Eindruck gibt es in dieser Sendung.
Danach wird es elektronischer. Pole hat die zweite Folge seine Waldgeschichten 12″-Reihe am Start. Knisternde Spannung auch hier und zwar in Form von minimalen elektronischen Dub-Sounds. Klasse! Die gesamte 12″ Reihe wird übrigens nächstes Jahr gesammelt auf einer CD erscheinen.
Gleich zwei hervorragende neue Alben gibt es von Tokyo Dawn Records: Zuerst die zweite Folge der Compilation “The Boogie”. Die macht mit Dancefloor-orientierten Nummern Lust zum Tanzen. Allesamt aktuelle Produktionen, jedoch bei einigen Stücken mit dezenten 80er Anleihen versehen. Allererste Qualität, wie man es von Tokyo Dawn Records fast schon gewohnt ist. Das zweite neue Release auf Tokyo Dawn Records kommt vom Produzenten Opolopo und versammelt Remixe die er angefertigt hat. Die Stücke mutieren unter seinen Remixer-Händer zu wahrhaftigen Dancefloor-Smashern. Da macht der Album-Titel “Mutants” durchaus Sinn.

Die ausstralische band The Strides hat vor kurzem ihr Debüt-Album bei Record Kicks veröffentlicht. In der Sendung vom 06. November habe ich es euch ausführlich vorgestellt.
Zur ersten Single-Auskopplung “Reclamation” gibt es nun auch ein Video:

Reggae, Hiphop, Afrobeat, Soul, Funk und Boogie-Tunes in dieser Soul Unlimited Sendung. Eine neue Compilation auf Souljazz Records mit Perlen aus dem Katalog vom legendären Label “Studio One Records”. Der Vorrat an qualtitaiv hervorragenden Songs scheint schier unerschöpflich zu sein. Begleitend dazu kommt noch ein Buch mit LP-Cover-Art dieses Labels heraus.
Die 8-köpfige australische Band “The Strides” hat ein vielseitiges musikalisches Repertoire, das nun auf dem Debüt-Album “Reclamation” dokumentiert wird. Die bestimmende musikalische Richtung ist Reggae, die mit Afrobeat und Hip-Hop stimmig verbunden wird. Sehr schön!
Meine Platte der Woche kommt von einer meiner Lieblingsbands: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Auf dem Album “Soul Time” sind Stücke versammelt die zum Teil bisher nur als 45er-Single oder als Sampler-Beitrag veröffentlicht wurden. Klasse Sache, denn das Album ist voller druckvoller Songs, die Tanzlaune machen.
Über die neuste Wiederveröffentlichung bei Sonorama werden sich Soul & Funk Fans ebenfalls freuen. Das Album “Soul Hour” von Dee Dee, Barry & The Movements ist eine in der Sammlerszene gesuchte Perle.
Kenny Dope Gonzales hat auf seinem (zusammen mit Keb Darge geführtem) Label “Kay-Dee” zwei Alben mit größtenteils unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen aus den späten 70er bzw. frühen 80ern veröffentlicht: Alben von den Bands “Mugo” und “Mellow Madness”. Alles Aufnahmen die es verdient haben von einem größeren Publikum gehört zu werden.

FUNK EXPLOSION

Ungewohnte Klänge zu Beginn der Sendung. Folky aber doch soulful. Wunderschön und ganz hervorragend ist “Talahomi Way”, das neue Album der High Llamas.
Shawn Lee hat schon wieder ein neues Album am Start, dieses Mal hat er sich mit AM zusammen getan. Das Ergebnis kann man auf “Celestial Electric” hören, es ist äusserst interessant und abwechslungsreich.
Das neue Album von Mayer Hawthorne ist die Platte der Woche: Nach dem Wechsel vom Indie “Stones Throw” zum Major-Label “Universal Republic” sind die Songs noch dichter und auch etwas mehr auf Erfolgstauglichkeit getrimmt, ohne daß es jeoch dem Sound geschadet hat. Ein schönes Album, das Spass macht.
Einige verloren gegangene Aufnahmen von Darondo, die urpsünglich auf seinem 1974 geplanten Debüt-Album hätten erscheinen sollen sind wieder aufgetaucht. Damals kam es nicht zur Veröffentlichung des Albums. Nun ist es endlich soweit, die Aufnahmen sind nun erstmalig veröffentlicht worden. Ein Glück, denn sie sind wiklich klasse!
Ebenfalls alte Aufnahmen sind von Jim Ford bei Light In The Attic wiederveröffentlicht worden. Sein Album “Harlan County” ist definitiv ein KLassiker, der auch heute noch gehört werden sollte. Eine aussergewöhnliche Mischung aus Folk, Soul, Funk und Rhythm’n'Blues.
Zum Schluss gibt es noch ein Mix-Set mit aktuellen Funk&Soul Produktionen, der letzten Monate.
